Astrologers of Kerala are traditionally from communities called Ganakan, Kalari Panicker, Kalari Kurup, Kaniyar, Kaniyar Panicker, Kani and Kanisu, who all are traditionally practicing vedic astrology. There are different versions of stories regarding the origin of this community, but some of them based on the caste based system dominance of Brahamana. Many of them are not believing these unfaithful explanation by historians like Anandakrishna Iyer(1973). Many of the members in the community are well versed in Sanskrit, which is the language of ancient Hindu religious texts. Most of the astrological authoritative texts are narrated in Sanskrit and a deep knowledge in Sanskrit helped this community to learn complex mathematical calculations and predictions based on nimithams.The astrologers of Kerala are performing exceptionally well in forecasting lucky days and hours, casting horoscopes, describing the causes of calamities, prescribing remedies for untoward events. They are planning the almanac, and every occasion of life is indispensable to them to predict its effects.
